Guide

Common webcam resolutions

  • 4K UHD (3840×2160) — high-end webcams and phone cameras. Great for recording, overkill for most calls.
  • 1440p QHD (2560×1440) — premium webcams; extra detail for cropping.
  • 1080p Full HD (1920×1080) — the sweet spot for streaming and recording.
  • 720p HD (1280×720) — standard for most laptop webcams and video calls.
  • 480p / 360p — low resolution, used to save bandwidth on slow connections.

Once you know your best resolution, select it in the online camera to take photos and videos at full quality.

FAQ

Resolution test FAQ

How do I find my webcam’s maximum resolution?

Click “Test resolutions”. The tool asks your camera for each standard resolution and records what it actually delivers. The highest supported one is your maximum.

Why does my 1080p webcam show 720p in video calls?

Many apps request 720p to save bandwidth. Your camera may still support 1080p — this test shows what the hardware can do, independent of the app.

Why are some resolutions “scaled”?

Some browsers (notably Chrome) can crop and scale the camera image to match a requested size. When the camera’s native mode differs from the request, we mark it as scaled so you know it’s not a native mode.

What’s the difference between 16:9 and 4:3?

16:9 is widescreen, used by HD video and most video calls. 4:3 is a squarer format common on older and some laptop webcams; it often offers the highest pixel count.
