Background

Live background blur, right in your browser

Messy room? Laundry in shot? This blur background online tool uses on-device AI to separate you from your surroundings in real time, then blurs everything behind you like a portrait-mode camera. Or swap the background for a solid colour, a soft gradient or any image you choose. Take photos or record video with the effect baked in.

How it works

The tool uses Google’s open-source MediaPipe selfie segmentation model. For every frame it estimates which pixels are “person” and which are “background”, then composes the result on a canvas. The model and runtime are downloaded once from public CDNs, about the size of a large photo plus the runtime. After that, all the processing happens locally on your device, and no video is sent anywhere.

Getting the cleanest edges

  • Light your face from the front, and avoid a bright window behind you.
  • Sit a metre or more in front of the wall so you stand out from it.
  • Plain clothes that contrast with the background help the model.
  • On older computers, a lower blur strength and a smaller window keep the frame rate up.

Using it for calls

Browsers can’t register a virtual webcam, so this effect can’t be piped into Zoom, Teams or Meet. Most of those apps have their own blur built in. This tool is ideal for photos, recorded video messages and checking how a blurred background looks. For more ways to look good on camera, read how to look better on webcam.

FAQ

Background Blur FAQ

How does the background blur work?

An AI segmentation model runs on your device and works out which pixels belong to you on every frame. Everything else is blurred or replaced, live.

Is my video sent to a server for processing?

No. The first time you use it, your browser downloads the open-source MediaPipe model and runtime (a few megabytes) from public CDNs. After that, all processing happens on your device and your video never leaves it.

Can I use this background in Zoom, Teams or Meet?

Not directly, because browsers can’t create a virtual camera. Use it to take photos and record videos here. Most video call apps have their own background blur built in.

Why are the edges around my hair a bit rough?

Segmentation works best with good, even light and a background that contrasts with you. Facing a window and sitting a little further from the wall make the edges noticeably cleaner.
